| The first step was to drill a hole. We used a 1 1/2 inch hole drill to do the job. | The hole has been drilled at this point. Next we will use a pipe tap to create threads in the hole. |
| We purchased a 1 1/2 inch pipe tap from a local plumbers supply store. It cost around $90 Canadian. | It was relatively easy to use, simply using a large mouthed wrench to assist. |
| We applied some silicone to the PVC interface tube in order to increase the chances of having a good seal. | It's a tight fit, this is as far as we got screwing the interface tube in by hand. |
| Using a wrench we were easily able to screw in the interface tube. | We smoothed out the silicone after the tube was fully screwed in. |
| The final product! We repeated this process for all three barrels. Only the middle one had two holes drilled. | The next step was to add a section of the main tubing to the PVC interface tube. |
| A PVC T-Interface was added to this. | Here is a closeup of the T-Interface. It is now hooked to two barrels. This will be our out-flow tube. All three barrels will empty through this T-Interface (since all connections are done at the bottom of the barrels). |
| Here we have added the outflow tubing and a copper valve. | This is just a closeup of the copper valve. |
| The final barrel is connected like so. | The final product (coming soon!). |
| What's left? I have to drill an overflow hole in the last barrel. I have to drill an airflow hole in the middle barrel. When this fills up with water there is a fair amount of air pressure built up. We have one problem barrel which I'll add pictures of soon. This was our first hole drilling attempt and we screwed up the hole size. Thus we had one extra hole. We patched this with some special putty. Unfortunately it's leaking. At the moment it's a VERY small leak, but I'm afraid that it will pop off and all of the barrels will drain out onto my lawn. |

cool project :)
just wondering, maybe for expensive but seldom used tools you could try renting them from places like home depot, or an actual tool rental place. another thing i was wondering, was that maybe on the barrel with the slightly leaky hole, you could try wrapping a bunch of teflon tape onto the thread, then screw it in, and then for good measure go medieval on it with a tube of silicone or even epoxy? hope the epoxy doesnt melt a hole in the barrel or the interface tube - maybe try in an inconspicuous area first ;) might a vent hole in each barrel also doubling as an overflow hole work for you? i dont know the whole design, but a girl wonders sometimes, you know :D also wondering if you're keeping the containers shaded to keep evaporation down and the algae growth to a minimum. sorry about all these questions... :-) |
