My wife wanted me to start some herbs and for these I wanted to throw a bunch of Chives seeds together in a larger seed starting container, so here are the steps I took to make a Large Self Watering Seed Starting Container.

First LSWSSC image
1. I am making this LSWSSC from a Chapman's Ice Cream container - French Vanilla is by far my favourite. Like the other SWSSC's, I have added a straw to be able to fill the reservoir.

2. The lid of the ice cream container will make the base. I cut six slits into the lid and into three of those slits I passed some cotton string to act as wicks. I then cut the center part of the lid away from the rim so it could fit inside the container.

3. The base of the LSWSSC will be supported by this inverted cream cheese container. If was up to me, we wouldn't have 'Light', but what can I do? The notch on this side is to allow easy water flow through the support piece.

4. On the opposite side I put a notch that cut out the bottom of the support, just to be different.

5. Here is what the base support looks like before it goes into the container.

6. So first the cream cheese container inverted.

7. And now the base on top.

8. I found the base too wobbly so I taped it to the sides in three places, now it is ready for soil.

9. So I added soil, moistened it, then coiled the first of the three wicks. Notice the Potting Mix bag is backwards.

10. I added more soil, moistened it, then coiled the second of the three wicks. The Potting Soil bag looks better from the front, doesn't it?

11. Do you think you could have guessed what this step was? I added more soil, moistened it and coiled the last wick.

12. Between the previous step and this one the Potting Soil bag in this photo was finished. Earlier today I bought a new bag of potting mix that had a higher ratio of perlite and vermiculite, this is what I used to top this container off, now it is ready for planting.
