Mike this past weekend has started his seeds for his garden while I have begun researching the specific seeds I will buy to start my own seeds. Mike found this from Instructables.com which shows a most excellent way to build self-watering seed starters using readily available items we already have at home. In the link they use 2L pop bottles, I will be using the smaller individual water bottles as the needs for starting seeds are different in terms of size. I won't bother to show any pictures as the Instructables link does such a great job of showing how they are made, but I will take a few photographs once they are built. Stay tuned to see photos and a description of Mike's seed starting situation in his basement greenhouse.

March 31st update - we have ordered seeds online from this company, they should arrive sometime in the next week or so. I have ordered the following seeds:
  • Roma Tomato
  • Beefsteak Tomato
  • Nantes Carrot
  • Little Finger Carrot
  • Dark Red Kidney Bean
  • Tendergreen Bean
  • Mammoth Melting Pea
  • Muncher Cucumber
  • Grande Chives
  • Greek Oregano
  • French Thyme

I think it may be too late, by the time we get the seeds, to plant the tomato seeds since these should have been started back in mid-March or perhaps earlier, but I may try growing one of each anyhow and then end up buying a more mature one or two from a local nursery in late May. According to this company's website all of the rest of the vegetables can be directly sown, so I may just do that. The last three are herbs that my wife wants us to grow, these will end up in built-in planters that already exist on our deck.
